Kushida Shrine
As Hakata’s tutelary shrine,the Kushida Shrine is widely known to local residents by the affectionate nickname “O-Kushida-san.” The Hakata Gion Yamakasa festival floats that are dedicated at this shrine are famous around Japan as a summer tradition of Hakata.

Myoraku-ji Temple
「This temple is said to be the origin of uiro sweet rice jelly. In the graveyard behind the Main Hall, you can see rows of tombstone for the senior vassals of the Kuroda Clan, as well as the grave of Kamiya Sotan, who was a wealthy merchant in Hakata during the Edo period.

Tocho-ji Temple
Temple was the first temple built in Japan by the Buddhist monk Kobo-daishi (Kukai). The Great Buddha Hall houses the Fukuoka Buddha, one of the largest wooden statues of a sitting Buddha in Japan. Another must-see structure is the all-wooden five-storied pagoda, which stands 26 meters in height.

Joten-ji Temple
This temple is the origin of the Hakata Gion Yamakasa summer festival, which is often said to be synonymous with Hakata. The temple is also the origin of milled food in Japan such as udon/soba noodles and manju bean cakes, as well as Hakata textiles.

Inside Kushida Shrine Station
Once you pass though the wicket gates you will encounter a magnificent wall display of Hakata Gion Yamakasa. In addition, the walls of the underground passageway feature displays of some 75 traditional craft items representative of Fukuoka and Hakata, such as Hakata dolls and Hakata textiles.

Zenzai Plaza, Kawabata Shopping Arcade
This is the oldest shopping arcade in Hakata. The approx. 400 m long arcade is lined with some 130 shops. With shops selling not only Hakata dolls and other souvenirs, Yamakasa goods, seafood from the Genkai Sea, and even popular ramen noodle shops, this is a popular spot for taking a stroll in Hakata.
