  1. MAHORA

    8/5(Sat)14:00~14:30/15:45~16:15

This ensemble was formed in 2016 by graduates of the Department of Traditional Japanese Music, Tokyo University of the Arts, with the aim of conveying the appeal of traditional Japanese instruments—koto (harp), shamisen (lute), kokyu (fiddle), and shakuhachi (flute)—to modern audiences. In addition to conveying the mahora (splendid land) of classical Japanese music, the group’s members also use their deep understanding of traditional instruments to compose and arrange pieces themselves, broadening music’s possibilities.

Geigi (entertainers) first appeared in Hakata around the middle of the Edo period. Geisha from Osaka were invited to come to the teahouses in Nagasaki to entertain guests, but since they were not permitted to stay in Nagasaki for more than 100 days, the geisha would come to Hakata temporarily to work. Some of the geisha are said to have settled in Hakata, becoming the first Hakata geigi.
